Mobile Interpreter for iPhone
Vaňková, Klára ; Chrápek, David (referee) ; Beran, Vítězslav (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with detection of text in an image. It describes searching for MSER areas, finding which of those areas are letters by using SVM classifier and connecting the letters into words. This work shows the usage of text detection in the application Mobile Interpreter , which extracts text from a picture and translates the text into a home language. The application uses OpenCV library for image processing and Tesseract library for OCR functionality. This thesis describes implementation of a prototype of the application and presents the results of the text detection.
The Correlation between the Speed of the Source Speech and Simultaneous Interpreter's Performance.
Moravcová, Dagmar ; Čeňková, Ivana (advisor) ; Sládková, Miroslava (referee)
The purpose of the present thesis is to look into the correlation between the speed of the source speech and simultaneous interpreter's performance between Czech and French from the perspective of the French listeners of the source speeches in French, of two groups of interpreters (students and professionals) and of the listeners of the speeches interpreted into Czech. The thesis consists of the theoretical and the empirical part. The theoretical part outlines Daniel Gile's Effort Model and than focuses on the delivery rate of the source speech and on various theoretical approaches of different scholars, on the errors occured in the process of simultaneous interpreting, on intrepretation strategies and on the quality of interpretation. The empirical part describes the research method, the experiment itself and the results of the experiment which focuses both on the number of occurences of different interpretation stategies in relation to the source speech delivery rate and on the number of occurences of various error categories depending on the speed of the quasi-authentic source speeches. The empirical part examines the differences between the performance of the students and of the interpreters. Their performance is then assessed by the Czech listeners. Keywords simultaneous interpretation,...
Cronin, Michael: Translation and identity. Routledge. London;New York (NY). 2006: A Translation and Commentary
Baštová, Kateřina ; Tobrmanová, Šárka (advisor) ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (referee)
This bachelor thesis comprises a translation of a part of a book called Translation and Identity by Michael Cronin, published in 2006 and a commentary on the translation. The commentary includes translation analysis of the original text, examples of translation problems with solutions and typology of translation shifts. The analysis was based on the model of Ch. Nord and the translation method was inspired by translation theory of J. Levý and partly also by the theory of P. Newmark. The translation shifts were based on the theory of A. Popovič. The translated text inquires into the interconnection of the modern and constantly changing society. It looks at the understanding of the concept of cosmopolitanism throughout the history from the point of view of several cosmopolitan theories and it studies the influence the understanding has on people's behaviour. It puts into context concepts of cosmopolitanism, identity and translation and it highlights the role of translation as an irreplaceable "bridge" which mediates relationship of the global world and influences how we see individuals and groups whether it is on the level of ethnic, national or an international society. In relation to this it explores the place of an individual and a group in the complex global society and the differences in...
Creativity in simultaneous interpreting
Včelicová, Tereza ; Timarová, Šárka (advisor) ; Čeňková, Ivana (referee)
This work deals with creativity in simultaneous interpreting. It regroups knowledge about the creativity in different fields, mainly in psychology, and presents the actual state of the research of creativity in translatology. It brings out the similarity of interpreting with improvisation and art, which are both highly creative. On the basis of the existing models of process of interpreting, it proposes an empirical study of the product of interpreting, using language transformations, with the aim to prove that simultaneous interpreting is a creative activity on more levels (lexical, syntactical and semantic). This experiment was not convincing on a lexical level, but in general it helped to confirm that interpreters are creative during simultaneous interpreting.

TV Reporter and Publicist Zdeněk Velíšek
Čermáková, Michaela ; Lokšík, Martin (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
The master thesis Television Reporter and Publicist Zdeněk Velíšek describes the personal life and professional activities of the Czech journalist, publicist, interpreter and translator Zdeněk Velíšek. The text is arranged chronologically according to individual time periods from his birth in 1933 and childhood, through his university studies, translation and interpreting work, to his work at Czech Television until 2019. In each chapter you can find a foreword describing political, social and historical context, followed by an outline of the development of television in Czechoslovakia. Both contexts influenced Velíšek's life. Detailed personal interviews with Zdeněk Velíšek, work with the archived materials from Czech Television and Czech Radio, as well as Velíšek's books of commentaries and translations were important sources for this thesis. The main focus is Velíšek's work at Czechoslovak (later Czech) Television since the 1990s, which describes his work as a reporter, commentator, presenter, dramaturge and author of documentaries. The television work is followed by a section about cooperation with Czech Radio. Equally important are the chapters about his work as a translator and interpreter in the last century, his professional translations from French in recent years and his awards. The text...
"Lost in Interpretation" - Redundancy and Forward Inferencing in Simultaneous Interpreting (SI)
KRATOCHVÍLOVÁ, Nela
The bachelor's thesis focuses on the process of simultaneous interpreting (SI). It addresses the issues an interpreter has to tackle in order to transfer the message from the source language to the target language accurately. It specifically examines omissions and inclusions made by the interpreter and the impact these may have on the communication at hand. The departure point for my thesis is the work of Chernov (1994) in particular, his concept of redundancy as a key factor in SI comprehension as well as his emphasis on the psychological process of 'probability' anticipation (forward inferencing). I collected and analysed a set of interpreted texts in order to demonstrate the applicability of Chernov's theory to simultaneous interpretation from English to Czech. A number of practicing interpreters was interviewed in order to triangulate my analysis against their perspectives and experience in the field.

Translating and interpreting services for judiciary practice in Russia (compared to services provided in the Czech Republic)
Rucký, Jaroslav ; Čeňková, Ivana (advisor) ; Šprcová, Ilona (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to describe the interpretation and translation services for judicial purposes in Russia and systematise the way in which they are used in judicial practice. The investigated topic is handled functionally and descriptivelyaccording to the following criteria: (1) development/historic - a description of the development of translation and interpretation services in the USSR and in modern Russia; (2) legislative - the status of the interpreter and the translator in the judicial process, their rights and responsibilities, formulation of ethical principles of their activities; (3) an objective evaluation - an assessment of the conditions for the exercise of a court interpreter and translator, qualifications and growth, the criteria for the selection of a professional translator/interpreter from agencies, the role of notaries in the translation process and its role in checking translations. Linking these aspects will enable not only a comprehensive view of the situation, but also to compare them with the services offered in the country.
